Math Tailor Onboarding
OVERVIEW
Math Tailor is an AI tool that helps teachers quickly create math materials tailored to meet their students' needs. As a new product, Math Tailor lacked in-app onboarding features, impacting product adoption, retention, and engagement. I scoped this project and designed a first-time UX to increase familiarity and become a scalable onboarding pattern across all our applications.

Usability study discovery
Through usability testing of Math Tailor, we identified that teachers discovered how it helps them manage their classrooms very late in their user journey. So we did our research and we cut to the chase—giving teachers an engaging onboarding experience that makes sure they know exactly what Math Tailor can do before jumping into the tool.
A value-first approach
Our goal is to demonstrate Math Tailor's value by addressing teachers' needs directly and answering the question, “What’s in it for me?” Thoughtful microcopy emphasises that Math Tailor meets teachers exactly where they need support.
Open navigation
We know teachers are smart—some might already be familiar with Math Tailor (thanks to our marketing team), or they might just prefer to explore on their own. So, we kept things flexible and give them the choice to skip it and come back later if they want. No pressure, just options.
Hyper-relevant context for first-run UX
We simplified the flow, abstracting the UI to only the essentials needed to depict material generation. The aim is to make sure the onboarding stays light and easy for a first-run experience, but also ensure that when users dive into the full product, everything feels familiar and intuitive.
More showing, less telling
Interactive elements and micro-animations do the heavy lifting in our onboarding, giving teachers a quick, easy orientation—no long explanations needed. We asked ourselves, "What should they read, and what’s better off being shown?" The goal is to spark curiosity about Math Tailor’s key features.
Scaling across all classroom applications
Building on the adoption of the Math Tailor onboarding flow, I extended this into a scalable, onboarding flow that can be used for all our classroom applications. This allows us to create consistent, efficient onboarding experiences across products while maintaining flexibility for unique classroom needs. This onboarding pattern comes to life using the Education Design System, a project I worked on previously.
My takeaways
Simplified UX and clear visual communication are key in making onboarding effective
The success of the onboarding flow was enhanced by strong collaboration with content design, engineering, and brand teams.
